In 2029. I officially apply for a job at Nasa, any position will do. Sorry, nerding out a bit here, but space explorations really excites me. Bill Nelson, administrator of Nasa, just held a speech about this project and others where he mentioned the overview effect. The overview effect is a cognitive shift of awareness that happens to astronauts when they view the Earth from outer space. The fragility of the planet and how we treat it, how the environmental degradation can be viewed on a larger scale with the naked eye, creates an increased awareness and sense of responsibility towards the planet and the necessary protection of the ecosystem. This effect is important to the survival of humanity and and the ecosystem. If humanity had not had the ambition to explore space we would perhaps never have experienced this effect in time to create a global environmental awareness. Well, it might still be too late to save many species and ecosystems, but we can try to rescue what we can. Viewing Earth from an outer space perspective even on film, should thus create a similar effect, maybe not as powerful as the real deal, but still better than nothing. This is why it is important to use images of Earth from an outer space perspective in environmental communication, as we all can't go there ourselves, yet. Space tourism suddenly seems less like an unnecessary luxury, but vital in raising environmental awareness.
Good night.
