So this is the thing
Loreen was interrupted during her performance at the Swedish 'Mello' ( Eurovision Song Contest) by a climate activist that is a researcher from Lund University belonging to the activist group Forskare från Lund (Researchers From Lund) and the organization Återställ Våtmarker (Reinstall Wetlands). They were actually three activists , but only one of them managed to make it up to the stage. What he states to be the reason for the action is : "We are heading towards a climate hell and we have to do everything we can to prevent the worst of the climate catastrophe " (Alcer, 2023). So, he is really convinced, and is a researcher from one of the most prominent universities in Sweden, and it's not 'prevent the climate catastrophe' but prevent the worst of the climate catastrophe. However, there is no official response yet from Lund University as how they will relate to this researcher and his activism. There are probably personal reasons behind any type of activism, but considering the risks involved as getting arrested, criminalized, stigmatized and socially excluded the expected benefits must somehow exceed these risks. I would also suggest peer pressure from the other activists as a motivating factor and a need to be seen on an individual level. Nonetheless, the conviction behind the need to succumb to radical activism must have been strong. How do we devalue a researcher that is also a climate activist from the climate change-denier-perspective? Because that is what will happen. He will be deemed an idiot by the deniers and a hero by the believers. Or was it a coup to place focus on Loreen's 'wetlands'? Bad joke, I know, but these days you can never be too certain on what is really going on. It was definitely an anti-clima[x]te, a me-ll/no-pause, or a comment on Girl Interrupted ? I'm sure Loreen will win the whole thing again anyway. I can't really take a stand in the climate change debate, because there are so many different types of research predicting a wide variety of possible outcomes. Of course I want to believe there will be no climate change emergency, but better safe that sorry and there is no doubt we have an environmental emergency with hundreds of species risking to become extinct and that for me is enough to change our mindsets and behavior towards a more sustainable ecological agenda.
Peace & Love
